Opal Plumstead Jacqueline Wilson 9780857531094 Books Reviews
It's a very good book, that is full of passion. It gets very sad during the end pages, but it's definitely a special book and is enjoyable to read.
Never before have I read a book so amazing. It touched me in a way no other book has. It doesn't matter how many times I read this, it will forever be my favourite. I can't stress enough how incredible this book is. Recommended. 150%
i love love love this book. i loved sooooo much that i finished it in two days. i just wish that morgan hadn't died. a MUST READ.
This is the most amazing book I have ever read , although it does have quite a few sad parts. Opal is like some of Jacqueline Wilson's characters (she loves art , she is very good with words-much like Hetty Feather , and she is very intellegent. . .), but she is also completely different. Opal is a sweet young girl who goes to St Margrets but when her father is sent to prison for things he didnt do she must leave school and work at Fairy Glen. Then Cassie and her mother have a fight which sends poor young Cassie packing. When Opal starts attending suffrage meetings she becomes very close to Mrs Roberts until she says something none of the suffragettes like. At the beginning of the story she doesn't believe in love especially when she thinks of Romeo and Juliet-at first he was in love with Rosalind but left her for Juliet then is willing to die without her , and when she sees Freddy-a young boy who works on the factory floor at Fairy Glen. But when she meets Morgan Roberts , Mrs Roberts son , she admits she is indeed in love and has days out with him and writes letters until one night they go home late and Mrs Roberts forbids them to see or contact each other again until a meeting turns bad when Freddy suggests Morgan enlist to fight in the First World War and he aggrees and Mrs Roberts cant convince him not to enlist so she gets Opal to try but she doesnt succeed either and he enlists although he hates the very idea of fighting but thinks when he takes over the factory that this will be his only way for gaining respect. Then a very sad thing happens that leaves Opal crying every night even when her dad comes home a completely different person after being in jail. Mrs Roberts is completely heart broken and decides to help Opal with her education by sending her to art school where she meets another young boy , Sam , but she doesnt want to feel guilty like she is betraying Morgan. She tells him 'I like you very much, Sam, but you do realize I can only ever be friends,' I said. 'I can't ever love anyone but Morgan.' . The story ends with Opal going home for a day after finishing her final year at art college. She goes all the way to Fairy Glen house-Mrs Roberts and Morgans house. The factory was closed and being pulled down. She goes to the garden at the back of the house which is covered in ivy and weeds. The day before Morgan had left for war they had spoken about him possibly dying
'You won't die, will you Morgan!' I burst out.
'I won't die not until I'm an old, old, old man,' he said
'You promise me? You promise me you won't get kiled in this awful war? You will come back safe and sound, not even wounded?'
'I promise you,' said Morgan, but when he pulled me close in an embrace, I could feel him trembling.
'Have you ever broken a promise?' I asked.
'Never,' he said, bit I knew he was lying.
'I don't believe in ghosts, I never have, but if you did die, you would come back and haunt me, wouldn't you?'
'Of course. I'll never lie still like my father under his hideous obelisk. I'll roam free, flying above you like these angels, and I'll be with you day and night,' Morgan whispered.
'That's so beautiful. But promise again you will cone back safe, even so.'
'I promise promise promise,' said Morgan, and then he kissed me.
But then at his garden;
'I'll try to believe in ghosts, Morgan,' I whispered. 'Come to me now. Haunt me for ever. Please. I'm waiting. I still love you so.' I waited for hours, but all I heard was the whisper of the leaves, all I saw was the ivy-strewn wreck of the garden.
If you like sad, historical, family adventures then this is the book for you. You absolutely MUST buy it. It's worth every cent.
Jacqueline Wilson really knows how to make you so happy and then have the story become totally different and twisted in her own beautiful way
I thought this book was amazing,
It touched my heart like never before,
I felt like it was my life at steak instead of
poor opal plumsteads,
Or as Cassie calls her,
Opie
OMG this book was amazing. It was sad at times and it had a bit of love in it. I would definitely read this book if you like a sad story and you like happy ending. One of my favourite books, opal is a character to remember. This book was worth every cent!!!!
