The value of a praying mother eBook Isabel C Isabel Coston Byrum

I love many older books on prayer and thought this looked promising. I was so disappointed by one chapter though that I couldn't get through the rest of the book.

The author gave an example of a mother who viewed her children as belonging to God (which is good!), but then went on to describe the way this mother responded when a wealthy relative wanted to possibly adopt one of this poor mother's children. She didn't voice any objections because, after all, now her children were given up to God, and she would accept whatever happened as His will. (Thinking of Abraham having to be willing to give up his Isaac!) She was heartbroken at the idea of losing her daughter, but she didn't say a word!

So her poor little girl was sent off to stay with this relative and was miserable because there was no love in the home, and she was so homesick. Finally, five weeks later, the relative decided not to keep the little girl and sent her home. The mother rejoiced, thinking God had tested her, but she had given up her child and God had given her back.

Of course, the author stated, the poor mother had no way of knowing that a further test was coming. The mother sent the children alone one day to visit their grandmother, but the grandmother wasn't home, so the children were left to themselves, playing in the street with street children who had broken a bottle. Another of the mother's daughters got cut by the broken bottle, but no one took it seriously, or looked at it closely.

The mother went on to church that night, leaving the children behind with her unsaved husband. Later, when she returned she found out the daughter who had gotten cut was disciplined by her father because she was in such a bad mood. The mother went in to check on her moody daughter and discovered she had a fever. The next morning, she couldn't open her mouth except for a tiny bit. Bottom line: Doctors couldn't do a thing for her, she had lockjaw from the broken bottle cut and she died. The Lord gives, the Lord takes away.

This mother was lifted up as a godly example! Never once was it mentioned that she had a responsibility to care for her children, to make wise decisions using her brain, not leave them to themselves, or to someone else (other relatives) just because someone asked to adopt them, etc.,!

This type of mentality irks me and I couldn't finish the book. There are other good books available on prayer for mothers which do not negate the importance of godly wisdom and responsibility, along with prayer!

The value of a praying mother eBook Isabel C Isabel Coston Byrum Reviews

If you are a parent read this book! Old fashioned but the principals are not. Much of the book is still applicable today and the pressures were very much the same issues we have today...although it was written in 1911! Of course we have the media now which makes peer pressure worse. If you read it there are great Christian parenting tips
The book is excellent!!!!! It tells me how to live a life free of demonic negative forces. Anger, drinking, drugs, etc. are all caused by negative forces.
Learned something new.
This was a book that I read in one day because it was so interesting and different than what I had expected that I just could NOT put it down until it was completed. What a great story based on a true account!
The book, of course, was written for another time, a different cultural climate, and we've progressed since then to being more open and understanding of others. This book is a good look back in time.
This is a great book to help you contend with your kids. My two kids are in their twenties and thirties, and it still gives me insight for dealing with my kids. Especially from my point of view and things you can pray about when you don't know what to pray.
I gave this book 5 stars
While growing in my relationship with God it was brought to my heart that my children who are also God's children should have a relationship with Him too. I started this book thinking it would have maybe daily prayers, but instead found a story about the type of relationship a mother should have with her children. I was deeply moved and convicted to have a deeper relationship with my children especially when it comes to our Father in Heaven. This story serves a wonderful example of what a faithful and praying can bring to a family.
I recommend this to any mother seeking some Divine instruction on motherhood.
