In his second book, Charles Shingledecker goes beyond The Crazy Side of Orthodoxy to look at the issues confronting all traditions of Christianity. He accompanies fellow believers on an entertaining and informative journey through the Bible, Church history, and the nature of Christian belief. Narrow is The Way, Jesus said. It is a hazardous path, too, lined with obstacles and roadblocks that lurk in the shadows of naïve fundamentalism. Chuck has bumped into many rough spots, surprised at the difficulties he never saw coming in a simplistic faith but also fascinated by the nuances of a more authentic one. Now he offers a candle to help light the way for others, to provide some comfort for those troubled Christians who feel isolated and alone in their doubts.

The Church has long done its utmost to enforce that feeling of isolation. It would rather not deal with the stumbling blocks that challenge believers to remain on the path of faith. Chuck did so, and illuminates the dark places with candor, compassion, and a good dose of irreverent humor. He describes archaeological and scientific discoveries that discredit biblical literalism, the illogical aspects of Christian dogmas like the Trinity and Virgin Birth, the moral consequences of the doctrine of hell, and the failures and sins of institutional Christianity. Even the existence of God is not exempt from his honest inquiry. But all the while, Chuck remains a person of faith. It enables him to look beyond the cold, hard edges of a purely material world and contemplate the holy and transcendent. He has discovered that the life of faith need not be plagued by guilt and fear, but can and should be filled with the freedom to ask tough questions, the freedom to seek truth, and the Freedom to Doubt.

I concur with the editorial reviews of this book although I am personally a non-Christian and a non-theist in any traditional sense.

Charles Shingledecker has written a much-needed and thought-provoking book I can recommend to both my theist and non-theist friends alike.

His forthright and honest examination of his own personal doubts is most refreshing, despite his apparent loss of some worldview-dependent friendships along the way.

Mr. Shingledecker brings us the perspective of one born into Catholicism, reborn into teennage fundamentalism and currently a still questioning congregant of Eastern Orthodoxy.

Anyone prepared to remove the blindfold from their blind faith or willing to tone down strident and overly confident atheism will find a truly kindred spirit here in this well-written and well-referenced testimonial which, incidentally, I truly enjoyed listening to on my Kindle Windows app for the blind.

Thank you, Mr. Shingledecker!

Freedom to Doubt Charles P Shingledecker Robert M Price Edwin A Suominen 9780985136253 Books Reviews

Mr. Shingledecker writes with wit and sincerity about the sorts of things that make you doubtful about Bible stories and the doctrines of the church. His writing style makes this an easy read even as the subject matter makes you have to think hard about the things you learned in Sunday School.

Freedom to Doubt is both the story of the author's journey in faith thus far and a primer on those serious issues about the Christian faith that can be either stumbling blocks or building blocks for anyone. Whether you believe or scorn some or all of the Christian faith as it comes down to us today; this honest appraisal will likely cause you to re-think what you believe and why you believe it.
An excellent, radically honest, look at some of the troubling questions that thinking Christians struggle with — and that the author doesn’t resolve. This is not an apologetic book filled with contrived justifications, convoluted reasoning, or simplistic advice to bolster up preconceived beliefs. Shingledecker (what a great name!) is happy to have his readers honestly stare into the face of doubt and embrace it as an essential characteristic of faith. The author writes engagingly, transparently, with warmth and humour along with a deep understanding, drawn from his own experience, to wisely guide the doubting believer. This is a must read for anyone willing to be honest about the difficulties of faith or who has been burdened with guilt by believers who refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of doubt. An excellent read and highly recommended — even for non-believers in Christianity!
Thank you Charles - for having the courage to be honest about our religion. You're discussion of doubt as an asset and not a liability is nothing short of liberating. It feels like I too can come out of the closet. For what benefit is my faux certain of belief when the only one who actually matters is not fooled.

Denying the problems in the Bible does not he!p the bible - it just makes us look silly, or worse, p ignorant and foolish.

If you are a christian you need to read this book. If you already have and you disagree then you are ignorant and foolish and god knows your doubts, even as you pretend you have none.
I was born into the born-again fundamentalist spirit-filled hell-fire and damnation preaching theology of the 40's and 50's. Fear based religion that made God the Father look like Attila the Hun and Jesus the Savior from God's wrath. The magic was in praying the sinner's prayer and in believing. As an innocent child I remember well the words of the song, "Only believe, only believe, all things are possible, only believe." But woe, alas, life has a way of robbing a child of innocence. Then believing in one's personal salvation begins to be threatened by fear, doubt, and maybe even anger toward this God who is so cruel and demanding. So, here I am, a lifetime later, still not willing to reject this God. I spent most of my life living off the statements of others regarding this God and began my own quest within the last 10 years to know Him, not about Him. I am grateful to Chuck for his honesty and depth of research put into this book. He expresses well the agonies many of us go through and the losses we experience in friends and sometimes even family as we dare to be honest. I am especially grateful for his entries about Mother Theresa and her own struggles in belief. Thank you Chuck for your courage to be real...
