The depth of lyricism in Part I, combined with the more hard-factual character of Parts II and III gives a striking balance that takes the reader into new maturity and understanding of life in this world. Black Crow Dress brings us up-close-and-personal unto the space of this horrid slavery "chapter" of our national life, experiences still occurring in our world. Roxane Beth Johnson makes us more human, more aware of the horror of what we human beings do to each other, and more aware of the power and depth of religion and of our own potential to respond.
There is a vitality here that reminds me of Lorca's duende, which these poems exude. I recommend the book. Johnson's poetry also reminds me of a quieter version of Ai's work.
This is interesting, to tell a story in brief sections this way. I find it a new way to think about my own work, but it could do much more. Still, I really do like it.
Roxanne Beth Johnson's second book "Black Crow Dress" had a high hurdle after her utterly fantastic "Jubilee". In "Black Crow Dress" we have an unusual African American history told through a series of poems that stand each on their own, and together weave a story that is significant and captivating. What's missing is the sentimental "woe was we" guilt-laden narratives. Instead Roxanne has given us universal, approachable truths about life and the living. This collection reads like a novel, moving you through page after page wondering what will happen next. If you buy three books this year, this should be one of them. You'll want to keep it, share it and remember it.
I'd taken this book out of the library a couple of times and loved reading it over and over again so had to own it. Like beautiful music you can listen forever. Highly recommended.
