Everyone hopes to form a lasting bond with their children. The things you do with them and around them shape them for adulthood. We guide our young in the ways we want them to go, but ultimately, they choose their own path based on what they’ve learned.

“Family Night” is an extreme horror novel by Tim Miller. It is the first of his that I have read. Many times extreme horror is directed for shock value and doesn’t have much substance beyond being horrific. This is entirely acceptable in a genre where your readers are expecting the worst you can possibly subject them to. However, it is nice when there is an actual plot to follow. It is also good to bond your readers to your characters before you begin to kill them off.

My criticisms of the extreme horror genre are that there is little plot, they focus only on the ‘evil’ characters, or that the horrific parts don’t happen until well into the story. When you are looking for the most horrible and deranged happenings, you don’t want to wait until half-way through the novel before some of this stuff happens.

Tim Miller’s “Family Night” immediately bonds you with a female character. You connect with her in a way that makes you feel you know her well in very little time. Then he rips that character away from you almost immediately. This is what extreme horror fans really want. It is the beginning of a story in which many other horrific things happen. He doesn’t, however, seem to focus on what might really gross us out or include a bunch of filth just to sicken up his book. The things that happen in the book all follow a given path. A path that leads you directly into darkness and a number of disgusting events; but not into unnecessary happenings that would muddy up the story line.

There is a man who is often belittled by his demeaning wife. He uses the anger and hatred she causes to abduct, torture, and ultimately eat people. This may seem like ‘torture porn,’ but the most horrific part isn’t his behavior with his victims. The most horrific part of Miller’s story is that the man enlists his teen daughter and young son to help him engage in his torturous rituals.

Any time a movie or book demolishes youth’s innocence, the audience is made to feel a sense of loss. Humans are not made to dismiss the love and innocence of children—we try to foster innocence and insolate it from the evils of the world around us. Miller’s main character does love his children very much. This is why he invites them into his world of ritualistic murder and cannibalism. As outsiders, we see this as appalling—but this is because we see his own decisions and horrific actions as appalling. We want our children to be like us, to love the things we love, and to take interest in our interests. This is exactly what the man in the story is doing. He creates a bond with his children that cannot be broken. Is this not what we all want?

The story moves along steadily. It is an easy read because it is written in a manner that flows naturally. There is a fun and disturbing twist at the end, without drawing it out too much.

Although I do seek out the extreme horror genre, I am also very critical of it. There is a way to do it well and a way that just screams, “LOOK AT ME, DIDN’T THAT DISGUST YOU?!” Tim Miller’s “Family Night” walks the line without overstepping into the abyss of plotless drivel.

I am a fan of "torture porn", movies such as Saw, Hostel, Dead End, etc. I like getting grossed out by obscene blood and gore, seeing what people can come up with next. Very few novels have actually made me cringe and Family Night is one of them. I don't really know how I came across this novel, but I'm glad I did. I can't really say much without giving anything away but if you are a fan of gore and twisted, messed up s--- then you owe it to yourself to read this book. It's short and I read it in just over an hour but it was worth every cent.
Tim Miller has created one messed up family. Eddie and kids might seem normal at first glance, but when the masks go on, all bets are off. They torture, kill, and eat. They have a method for capturing victims that makes them almost unstoppable...almost. Enter Detective Julie Castillo. She wants justice for the family's latest victim, but will she get a little too close to the action?

Tim Miller's Family Night is a gory, good time. It has a great cast of characters to root for and root against. It also has a very satisfying ending. I highly recommend this book and anything else from Tim.
Family Night is a true horror story. It takes place in Texas and is a story about the Mason family. Eddie Mason is married to a nagging wife who belittles him at every turn. He is out of a job & out of his mind. The children, 14 yet old Brani and 5 year old Jeffrey, understand that their mother is unkind. When she isn't badgering Eddie she is after the kids. Eddie forms a ritual with his children, bonding with them. The three of them hunt, torture and slowly kill their victims. Then sit down together to a flesh filled fiasco.
Tim Miller creates a horror story that could truly happen in this day and age. I gave it 5 stars due to being a quick read with a free flowing story line.
This is a family where the man and the two kids enjoy kidnapping, torturing, and eventually eating people, the only one not into the fun is the wife, who happens to be a real bitch. It's more gory than scary, although what is scary is that the things you read in this book, could probably be done in real life. If you've enjoyed Saw and Hostel, then consider Family Night the next best thing, I like how it's told from the point of view of the bad guys and the good guys, ironically, I found myself rooting for the good guys, as much as I love bad guys in other horror novels, I couldn't help to feel sorry for the victims. After all, what is the point of kidnapping a human being and torturing her or him in the worst possible ways, extending their pain beyond measure? The book doesn't answer those questions, the father seems himself as a predator, a hunter, doing what comes naturally to him. Does the wolf feel sorry for the sheep? Neither does this guy. I do like that the bad guys get what they deserve in the end. Tim Miller makes his characters go through hell, but he's not without compassion.
What a fantastic story! This is what horror is all about. I devoured this novel, letting the creepiness and the terror move in and reside within me until the final pages.

So, what’s for dinner has a different take in this novel as some of the characters wonder who is for dinner? When a waitress goes missing, Detective Julie Castillo goes to work piecing together what occurred just before the disappearance. Meanwhile, Eddie is teaching his children the way of the Mask while Eddie’s wife nags in the background. Eddie is so proud of his two small children and it isn’t too long before their demeanor and carving skills are chef-quality.

Oh, this novel is gruesome and bloody but that is what happens when you experience horror at its finest. I loved the novel’s fast-pace and the events that occurred kept me on edge, I wanted more but I squirmed as the events unfolded. An excellent piece of work, one that I highly recommend.
